During this COVID-19 pandemic we’ve been preoccupied with our physical health--and rightfully so. However, we don’t want to forget that wellness includes our body, soul and spirit. This month I want to discuss the affects of emotions and feelings on our overall health.

I’ve been working remotely for seven weeks and my emotions have ranged from grief to gratitude; anxiety to peace; anger to love, and everything in between. Emotions aren't necessarily bad, but untamed, they threaten my relationships, my work and my overall wellness. Our emotions and feelings can either support or sabotage our health.

14 Wellness Tips: Dr. N's April 2020 Newsletter

How are you? I mean, how arel you really doing? So much has changed in just the last month, I wonder if I’m dreaming and will wake suddenly from this nightmare. I’ve been sheltering at home for three weeks and I expect this to continue for several more weeks. While there is a lot of uncertainty, and even more sadness and grief, I do see this as opportunity for me to slow down, evaluate and take special care of myself.

In December I found myself physically and emotionally depleted. I needed to beef up my nutrition, my exercise, my sleep and my stress management. I wasn’t sure how I would manage with everything coming at me. Then, suddenly COVID-19 hits the country. In all this, I believe God is still looking after me and allowing me to reset and gain my balance during this forced stay-at-home time. I’m renewing 14 of my tried and true self-care habits to reach and maintain my wellness goals. Here they are:

1) Maintain a grateful heart: Twice a day, morning and evening I jot down 10 things or people I am grateful for.

2) Stay hydrated: I start the day with a minimum of 16 ounces of water before I eat or drink anything else. Throughout the day, I drink half my body weight in ounces of water. (Now that I’m home, I don’t worry about how often I visit the bathroom.)

3) Rinse sinuses: At least once a day, especially during this season, I use my Neti pot to rinse my sinuses. Here’s YouTube from Mayo Clinic explaining this practice, its benefits and how to start.

4) Practice mindfulness: The benefits of mindfulness are well researched. I start my morning with a 10-minute mindfulness practice, in addition to my morning devotions.

5) Diffuse essential oils: Throughout the day, in every room, I run a diffuser at least 30 minutes. I vary the essential oils I use. Diffusing essential oils has psychological and physiological benefits.

6) Take my supplements: Experts agree that it’s nearly impossible for those of us in today’s modern world to get the nutrients we need from our food. I start with the Master Formula because its proprietary formula is comprehensive and easily assimilated by my body. But I also take Sulfurzyme, BLM and Agilease for my joint health. During this season when immune and respiratory support are so important, I take Inner Defense daily, more if needed.

6) Optimize my nutrition: Since I can’t grocery shop much and I rely on Walmart Pick Up or Insta Cart, I can’t always get the quality of food I want. I am faithful, however, to take at least 2 ounces of NingXia Red because of its high antioxidants and nutritional value.

7) Exercise: Over the years, I’ve accumulated many exercise programs, plus I have a rebounder and Gazelle. I treat myself to at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. My favorite is the Body Gospel by Donna Richardson.

8) Breathe deeply: While mindfulness stresses the importance of the breath, I strive to practice deep breathing more often throughout the day. Periodically, I will take a favorite essential oil, place a few drops on the palm of one hand, rub my hands together and make a scent tent over my nose. I practice several, often 10 deep breaths. Breathing oxygenates the body; and, I understand those invisible critters that make us sick don’t like oxygen.

9) Anoint myself with an essential oil. The essential oils have wonderful properties that our bodies love. For example when I place Valor on my shoulders I feel calm and grounded. I enjoy doing this with Frankincense, as well.

10) Soak in an essential oil-infused Epsom salt bath: This is so relaxing and there are several studies supporting the health benefits of magnesium sulfate. I don’t get to do this everyday, but when I do it, I feel wonderful.

11) Think positive thoughts: It’s hard to ignore the news, but I limit how much I watch daily. ANTs (automatic negative thoughts) are known to weaken the immune system and sabotage wellness.

12) Smile and Laugh: A simple smile improves the mood and laughing releases happy hormones, something we can all use at this time.

13) Support the gut: A properly functioning digestive system is vital for optimal health. In addition to eating the best foods I can, I take a probiotic (Life 9), a prebiotic (MightyPro) and an enzyme (Essentialyme, Essentialyme-4, Detoxyme or Allerzyme.)

14) Sleep Well: The body needs 7-9 good hours of sleep to clean and reset for the next day. The essential oils have been amazing in helping to improve my sleep. I diffuse them and rub them on my feet at night. I especially enjoy Cedarwood, Lavender and Peace & Calming.

These are practices I have learned over the years. I encourage you to start with one or two and practice it for a week. Note how you feel and continue to add a practice until you begin to see improvements in your health. You’ll move closer to a healthier lifestyle.

RECIPES OF THE MONTH

Salt mixture for my Neti Pot

  • 8 Tablespoons of Fine sea salt
  • 10 drops Rosemary
  • 6 Drops Tea Tree

I use 1/8 teaspoon mixed in the water in my Neti pot.

Naysa

After I do a nasal rinse, I apply with my little finger a drop of Naysa inside each nostril.

  • 6 drops Eucalyptus Radiata
  • 5 Drops Tea Tree
  • 1 drop Peppermint

Top with Sesame Seed oil in a 1 ml dropper bottle

Keeping Your Immune System Strong: Dr. N's March 2020 Newsletter

Hi,

While it’s not officially spring, these sunny March days are a welcome change and lift my spirits. In this newsletter I want to talk to you about how to overcome the fear of getting sick, some super exciting new changes in the YL compensation plan, the really cool March promos, extra freebies and an Immune Support Protocol. Plus, I’m already planning for our Spring Launch, formerly the Live Your Passion Rally.

During the winter months, it’s not uncommon for people to be more fearful of getting sick. We are cooped up indoors longer, with less opportunities to enjoy the healing power of nature. This year has been even more frightful with an increase in flu cases of and the coronovirus epidemic plaguing the globe. While we don’t know much about this virus—how it is transmitted and how to avoid it—we do know the basics about keeping our immune systems in tiptop shape. Besides washing our hands and surfaces often, using Thieve hand sanitizer, coughing in your elbow and avoiding those who are obviously sick, the key is keeping your immune system strong so it can do its job. Here’s my six tips for staying healthy all year round.

1) Breathe deeply - The body needs oxygen that comes from the simple act of breathing. Of course toxins in the air can compromise the quality of that air. Many wonder about wearing masks, but masks can leak and it’s not know how much the mask can protect against the tiniest particle. What you can do is avoid known toxins in your personal care and cleaning products. Avoid smoke in any form—in clouding candles. In your home of office, diffuse pure, therapeutic essential oils that only contain the purest plant form possible. When away from home, apply a drop of essential oil to the hands, rub together and cup over the nose to make a scent tent. My favorite immune boosting oils are any of the citrus oils (lemon, lime, orange, tangerine) and, of course, Thieves blend.

2) Eat clean food- Food provides the nutrients the body needs to repair, replenish and nourish. The closer the food is to it’s original state, the more your body will maximize that food. Unfortunately, today, it’s almost impossible to get all the nutrients your body needs from even the most organic produce. Everyone needs to supplement the diet. I use the Master Formula, the closest supplement to real food that I know. I also take a Super B and Super C.

3) Move often - Our bodies were made to move. It’s not necessary to be in the gym an hour a day. Simply walk more. Be intentional about taking walking breaks throughout the day, 10 minutes at a time will do wonders. If you are having problems with stiff joints or soar muscles, try rubbing some PanAway, Deep Relief, or Wintergreen on the area before you walk. If your skin is sensitive, use a little almond, coconut or V-6 oil with the essential oils. I also find relief with the Cool Azul pain cream. It has the benefits of the pure plants without any synthetic fillers or additive.

4) Meditate daily -This is not as easy as it sounds. I find it hard to just sit still for 10 minutes. If you are fidgety or have a monkey mind, you might find my 10-practice helpful. I place a few drops of my favorite essential oil on my palm. I use Valor when I need confidence and Clarity when I need to focus. I rub my palms together and cup them over my nose. I breathe into the count of 4, hold my breath for 4 and breath out to the count of 4 and hold for 4. I repeat this 10 times and then start over.

5) Release negativity -This often forgotten key to health reminds us to release negative emotions, thoughts and beliefs that no longer serve us. Sometimes we just need to be aware of negative thoughts that are robbing our energy. Other times we may need to do a deeper emotional release to rid ourselves of deep seated emotions that are buried in our bodies. As I’ve been working on this, I use the Release blend and ask God to reveal any emotions, thoughts and beliefs that no longer serve me. This is where I’m discovering the fears that have often interrupted my joy and happiness. I’m learning to slowly release these fears.

6) Rest nightly- There is no substitute to sleep. We cannot be constantly sleep deprived and expect to make it up on the weekend. The body needs rest during each night to restore and reset. Yes, the body needs eight hours to do it’s healing magic at night. On nights I need a little help, I find that the essential oil gel cap Sleep Essence or the ImmuPro tablets are a simple, non-addicting, non-pharmaceutical way to aid my sleep.

Remember, the body is designed to heal itself. Supporting your immune system using these tips will decrease your risk of getting sick. Here’s to a healthier you!

Gratitude & CBD You can Trust: Dr. N's February 2020 Newsletter

Hi, 

The last time I remember being really sick was January 2014. I was coming off of the holidays, finishing graduate school classes and preparing for the last stretch of my dissertation. My body was depleted and I spent several days with classic flu symptoms. Fast forward a month ago and I caught some random GI bug and found myself home for a couple of days with a cough, fever, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. I’ll spare you the gory details. Although the temperature and worse symptoms only lasted a couple of days, I did not feel 100% for several weeks. After one trip to Urgent Care, and two visits with my primary doctor, I was able to schedule an appointment with a GI specialist April 1. The doctors at Urgent Care explained they were only able to treat symptoms. My primary care doctor ordered an Ultrasound that showed nothing significant. For the most part, I felt fine, until I ate something. So, here I was unable to eat solids and needing to wait until April for a specialist.

What could I do while waiting to see a specialist? I wanted to boost my whole body systems, not just treat the symptoms. I started with prayer and began remembering all that I’d learned over the years from my mother and the many medical experts I'd studied, traditional and non-traditional. (As I prepared to celebrate Black History month, it was also a time to reflect on the many medical contributions of my ancestors.) My protocol was simple: rest, drink plenty of fluids, keep both ends open, purge my mind of negativity, manage stress, call on the God of my father and eat well. I only lost a couple days of work, even though it was several days before I could eat solids. Surprisingly my weight didn’t fluctuate much and my blood sugar remained balanced. There was a cancellation, so I’ll see the specialist in a few days. I’ve had GI issues most of my life, so I welcome a current evaluation, especially one using non-intrusive tests. I’ll keep you posted.

Needless to say, my oil of choice this month is Gratitude, a blend of Balsam Fir, Frankincense, Rosewood, Myrrh, Galbanum and Ylang Ylang. I’m grateful for all my health and wellness teachers, my family and friends who prayed and supported me these last weeks and the Young Living products that kept me energized and active. My doctor recommended Vitamin C and a probiotic. I turned to my Young Living stash. I was able to drink the NingXia Red when nothing else but water and lemon juice would stay down. I took Inner Defense and Super C consistently to boost my immune system and I rubbed the Di-Gize on my tummy to soothe my discomfort. I took the Life 9 probiotic to nourish my gut and the Thieves Essential Oil in my diffuser provided additional immune boosting as I rested. (The Cedarwood, Lavender and Lime recipe below was my favorite nighttime diffuser blend.) I found the BRAT(C) diet (bananas, rice, apples, toast [crackers]) helpful as I eased into normal eating again. Yes, I am grateful and I’m starting to feel better.

New You in 2020: Dr. N's January Newsletter

Happy New Year! You're Amazing!

As I write this first newsletter of the new decade—2020, I’m just a few days away from the New Year. Like most people, I like to look back over the year, many years with mixed feelings. Often, the first things that come to mind are the disappointments, regrets or life events beyond my control. This year, I’ve watched friends and family members transition to the next life and others experience extreme health challenges. I helplessly watched and prayed through the challenges my loved ones faced, knowing only God’s miraculous hand could change the course of things.

My word for the year was Release: release those beliefs, attitudes, thoughts, and behaviors that no longer serve me. I started the year by purging books, clothing and other items that clutter my house. This led to some serious decluttering of limiting beliefs that sabotaged my physical, spiritual and emotional health. For example I was taught, early in my studies that I didn’t need nutritional supplements—I could get everything I needed from my food. This was an untruth that freed me to develop a supplement protocol that contributes to my vitality and vigor. Some of the other beliefs I shed were spiritual dogma, incorrect perceptions, childish attitudes and antiquated social values. I found myself free to view the present through fresh eyes as I walk in God’s divine purpose for me.

As I reviewed my 2019 calendar and my journal I realized I have many things to celebrate this year.

1) I took my first Cruise, an Alaskan cruise and realized that the extended time away on the water was very therapeutic for me.

2) I spent extended time with my older brother in Seattle, exploring the attractions, arts and nature. I was reminded of how precious our moments with family are and to not take them for granted.

3) I witnessed my sister’s 30th Wedding Anniversary in New York, with family and friends I rarely see. David and I celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary during this trip.

3) After having a health scare at the 25th YL Convention, I realized that my growing knowledge of essential oils has allowed me to enjoy a healthier life than I would have otherwise at my age. And although I had two previous health conditions resurface this year, I avoided major medical interventions by applying what I’ve learned about natural medicine working with the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

4) Learning about the mind/body/spirit connection to health has allowed me to discover emotional freedom that I never imagined possible. I learned to use the Essential oils and EFT to experience emotional freedom I never thought possible.

5) Finally, I’ve had the privilege of sharing my wellness journey with you. So many of you took the 3-month challenge last year, renewing it every 3 months. I enjoyed hearing your successes. I celebrated my best wellness checkup ever and I’ve managed to avoid surgery that I was told was inevitable. You may not be where you want, but you’ve probably made more progress than you realized. Just the fact that you are adding Essential Oils and Essential Oil products to your daily regimen is a plus. Caution: Before Starting a Winter Detox or Weight Loss program

Considering starting a weight loss or detox program at the beginning of this year, think again. Ever wonder why many struggle to keep resolutions to lose weight the first of the year? One theory is that the seasons affect the body and trying to lose weight goes against nature. Generally, winter foods are heavy, more fat-laden, designed to keep us warm. Starting a weight loss program or cleansing regime works against the body’s natural desire to keep you warm, even if that means to put on more weight. When the body gets less food during the cold months, it thinks it is going into starvation and tries to conserve energy, making it harder to shed excess pounds. (Remember what you learned in school about animals that hibernate?)

Normally, our bodies crave more heavy proteins in the winter. However, this can be taxing on the kidneys, so it’s important to support the kidneys and keep them clean. Otherwise, we risk non-digested proteins being deposited into body tissue instead of eliminated through the kidneys, which can lead to gout.

One simple way to help support the kidneys and cleanse gently is to eat little to limited processed foods, starches or sugars--a good way to starve overgrown yeast. Because animal protein, especially today’s western meats, can stress the digestive system, it’s important to use plant-based proteins as much as possible and support the kidneys and digestive system continually.

Keep the Happy in the Holidays

For some reason I’ve been thinking about a song I learned to play on the piano in grade school—Toyland. I used to peck out this tune on our old piano and sing with all my heart these words, “Toyland, Toyland, little girl and boy land, once you pass its borders, you can never return again.” I had no idea what those words meant until now. The magic of the season with the lights, gifts and anticipation has passed for me and I can’t return. I do work at enjoying the holidays, but I admit some years are more work than others. I’m in a new season now. With that said, I still want to enjoy this season with all its memories, traditions, possibilities, people, parties and surprises. That’s why I strive to intentionally keep the "Happy" in my Holiday. For our family, we have special memories around our Christian traditions, especially the expectancy of the Christ child. When our children were home, we enjoyed weekly, sometimes daily advent meditations with our advent wreath, candles and scriptures. Also in this newsletter, I’m including a fun DIY recipe I made the day after Thanksgiving. I started making Christmas gifts as a child out of necessity. I remember my first Christmas as a newlywed. I only had $6 to purchase all my decorations and family gifts. With the patterns and ideas from a Woman’s Day magazine, a couple of skeins of yarn, crochet needles and a lot of creativity, I managed to gift everyone on my list. Even though the need isn’t as great today, simple DIY projects are nurturing and relaxing for me. It’s also rewarding to know that my gifts have purpose and contribute to the health and wellbeing of those I love. I found this recipe on the Aromatics International Blog, written by Sandra Hillmon.

Dreamy Peppermint Foot Cream

Use a double broiler or coffee or candle warmer to melt:

  • 2 oz Shea Butter
  • 1 oz Coconut Oil
  • 1/2 oz Cocoa Butter

Remove from heat. Add:

  • 1/4 oz of Avocado oil
  • 30 drops Lavender oil
  • 15 drops peppermint oil

Mix well. Pour into 1-ounce glass jars. Makes about 4.

I think this amazing moisturizing product feels great on the feet, hands, and body.

Six Do's for the Best Holiday Season

Six "Dos" for the Best Holiday Season Ever

Several of you have shared that usually this time of the year means added stress and several physical issues, including allergies, colds and arthritis. However, after a year of following a personalized wellness plan that included YL essential oils, essential oil-infused supplements, NingXia Red and a few simple lifestyle changes, this year you’re feeling so much better compared to years past. You’re experiencing the results of focusing on fueling the body’s natural systems and eliminating the toxins that sabotage your wellness. I’m so grateful that God’s divine plan for health is available and simple. There are many different protocols but these plans basically agree that we need: Oxygen, sleep, movement, good nutrition and stress management.

One question I get often as we approach this season is: is it practical to maintain a healthy lifestyle during the holidays? I say, YES! And, it’s not about what you can’t have or enjoy. In fact I’ve got six "Dos" that will definitely keep you moving toward your health goals, even as you enjoy the holidays.

1) Do carry your YL oils with you at all times. Have them in every room of the house, in your car, backpack, purse, pocket and office. Use the oils for a quick breathing break to get more oxygen into the body. Diffuse the oils while your work, party and sleep. Wear your favorite essential oil (my favorite is Joy) as your holiday fragrance, avoiding any artificial and toxic fragrances when possible. If I had to select one oil for the season, it would be Thieves, the ultimate immune support containing. clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus radiata and rosemary cineol.

2) Do take your YL supplements daily. No matter what your meals look like the rest of the day, at least you’ve given the body optimal support. If you are just getting started on this wellness journey and don’t have your wellness plan, I suggest drinking at least 2 ounces of Ningxia Red—a powerhouse of antioxidants and nutrients—daily. To keep the digestive system working properly during all those holiday treats and meals, do take Life 9 (a high-potency probiotic) and your favorite enzyme. Young Living has four different enzymes. 3) Do protect your sleep. While you sleep, the body works to support healthy brain function and overall physical health. Aim for 8 hours most nights.

4) Do keep moving. Just 20 minutes of movement daily supports your gut health and suppresses inflammation. You don’t have to do a killer workout, either. Just a simple walk is enough.

5) Do manage your stress. Whether it’s the schedule, the family or the unending to-do list, keep everything in perspective. Learn to take breath breaks to reduce stress and avoid activating harmful stress hormones. A minimum of 10 deep breaths—add an essential oil—is all you need.

6) Do keep a Gratitude Journal. Yes, expressing gratitude daily has health benefits. Just write down 10 things you’re grateful for each day. It’s a simple, but powerful habit.

After all this rain, it’s refreshing to wake up to sunshine. Sunshine always makes me smile. How about you? With half the year behind us, we still have another six months to move toward a healthier lifestyle. Whatever your pace, keep moving.

What I like about pursuing a healthy lifestyle is that I can avoid aimlessly swiping at symptoms and I can address the root factors that sabotage my health. Using the plants and plant-based products moves us closer to God’s divine design for health. I’ve been on this journey since my mother conceived me, as she was a “health nut” ahead of her time. Many things have changed, but the basic truths remain: The more I adopt the simple lifestyle habits of the ancients, the healthier I feel. Truthfully, I feel more energetic than I did in my 20s and 30s. I believe age is just a number and caring for my body is my number one priority. I only get one body and replacement parts are rarely as good as the original. How can I fulfill my purpose to empower others, if I allow myself to become disempowered with poor lifestyle choices?

I’m so grateful for all of you that are joining me on this healthy lifestyle journey. It’s not always easy, but it ifs definitely worth it. Are you tempted to give up? After reading Dr. Daniel Amen’s Memory Rescue book, I noted his response to five excuses for not taking charge of one’s health. He calls them “Little Lies”. I’ve summarized below:

Lie #1:This is too hard.

Truth: Actually focusing on being healthy is easier than being sick, losing one’s joy, independence and purpose.

Lie #2: I don’t want to deprive myself.

Truth: Making poor health decisions robs us of everything we really want: energy, memory, good health, abundance. Getting well is about all the things we can have and do, not all the things we’ll lose with sickness.

Lie #3: It’s too expensive.

Truth: Are you kidding? The average medical costs of a person with diabetes is about $13,700 a year. Compare this with the $50 - $300 we can budget monthly for YL supplements and products, that keep us above the wellness line and moving toward a healthier lifestyle. Those with a chronic diseases don’t recognize the direct and indirect costs, as well as the cost of their lost productivity. This doesn’t include the burden poor lifestyle choices places on society as a whole and the healthcare system. Investing to live above the wellness line leaves more money to do and enjoy the things we love.

Lie #4: I don’t have time.

Truth: OK. We are living in a fast-paced, convenience-first society. However, spending time and energy to optimize our health adds years to our life and gives more time in the end—time we can enjoy. Furthermore, who has time to be sick?

Lie #5: Everything in moderation.

Truth: Let’s be real, this is an excuse to continue making poor health decisions and compromising our health. One little poor choice, often leads to more and more until an unhealthy habit is hard to break.

It’s time to speak the truth. Living a healthy lifestyle is not too hard, too expensive, too restrictive, too time consuming nor too strict. It’s everything you deserve and can receive by starting now with one step at a time.

I made this recipe to soothe my shoulder discomfort. I love the way it feels and smells. (Use the oils you have and adjust as needed.)

Summer Wellness: Dr. N's 2019 June Newsletter

I’m looking forward to discovering new ways to have “fun”. I’ll keep you posted. However, before I leave I wanted to be sure you have the latest information products. These have been among my favorites. 

Lime Oil

Lime oil is a citrus oil with d-limonene that supports the immune system. I add a couple of drops each morning to my Red Juice cocktail. I adapted this drink from Dr. Minke’s recipe.Here’s my recipe and you can adapt it to meet your needs.

In a 24 ounce bottle I add:

2 ounces of Ningxia Red

1/2 ounce Mindwise

2 drops YL Lime Vitality Essential Oil

1 teaspoon Sulfurzyme or empty 5 Sulfurzyme capsules

1 scoop MegaCal (optional)

1 scoop AminoWise (optional)

Juice from 1 lemon or lime (optional)

Fill with purified water and shake well. Enjoy.

Northern Lights Black Spruce

OMG! Every since this oil was introduced, its been one of my favorites. Whether I’m applying this oil topically or diffusing it, it makes me feel better physically and emotionally. I feel like I’m enjoying the fresh air of the forest and I just love it. I was getting low as I’m preparing for my trip, so I was ecstatic to learn I can get Northern Lights Black Spruce for free this month.

Ningxia Nitro

If you know me, I avoid consuming addictive substances, including coffee, alcohol, sugar and energy drinks. However, Ningxia Nitro is different. I’m reminded again to just enjoy each day, each moment, each experience and each person—all are Divine encounters. In this newsletter I’ll share Month 2 of my 6-month Spiritual Meditation Plan. I've added my favorite Healthy Heart Oily recipes, ideas for Valentine's gifts, plus updates on the monthly promos. Spiritual/Emotional Meditation Plan

It’s important to provide emotional and spiritual support as you move along your wellness journey. Last month, I shared Month 1 of my spiritual/emotional meditation plan. I adapted my plan from Jennie Fuller’s Moments of Reflections and Aditya Nowotny’s 15 Spiritual Oils presentation. In month 1 we started the year off with Abundance, Hope, Motivation and Believe essential oil blends. In Month 2 I’ll be meditating with Envision and Magnify Your Purpose. It’s ironic, but just as January ended, I found myself feeling disconnected, fuzzy and unsure of my direction, even a little sad. This is the perfect time for me to renew my purpose and envision God’s purpose for me. I remember the saying: When I can't trust God's hand, trust His heart."

Love Your Heart Recipes

Hearty Heart Diffuser Blend

10 drops AromaLife Essential Oil

5 drops Ylang ylang essential oil

V-6 vegetable oil complex (or liquid coconut oil)

10 ml glass roll-on bottle

Drop the essential oils into the roll-on bottle. Fill with V-6 oil and replace the roll-on top. Apply to your wrists and chest to nourish your cardiovascular system.

Bath Salts

3 drops Stress Away essential oil

3 drops Peace & Calming essential oil

1/3 cup Epsom Salts

4 oz glass Mason jar

Mix the Epsom salts, Stress Away and Peace & Calming in a glass bowl. Pour into the jar. Add 1 tablespoon of this mixture to your bath water and nurture your heart.

Capsule

4 drops Clove Vitality Essential Oil

4 drops Lemongrass Vitality Essential Oil

Vegetable Capsule

Add the essential oils into the capsule. (Top with liquid coconut oil if desired). Ingest one capsule for heart nourishment.

Happy 2019 New Year!

Happy New Year!!

This is not a mindless cliche. I really mean it. I really want you to have the best year ever in 2019. First let’s look back on the milestones and successes we had in 2018. What were your successes, how have your grown? As for me...

This time last year, I was rubbing PanAway, Wintergreen and Cool Azul on my knees and elbows several times a day to ease my discomforts. Today, I’m running up and down our stairs, forgetting what it felt like a year ago. I took the 3-month challenge and got serious about supporting my musculoskeletal system.

A year ago today, I was spiritually famished. I learned to have a daily quiet time with prayer and Bible reading during my college days—a habit I’ve kept over the years. But I needed something fresh. Last January, I added a spiritual oils meditation practice to my quiet time. I began recognizing limiting beliefs, values and actions that were interfering with my life purpose. I’m starting to get my joy back.

Finally, a year ago, I started a new, challenging position at work. As I reread my journal, there’s tremendous evidence of God’s work in and through me. I’ve grown, along with you, over this last year and I can’t wait to see what more God has in store for us in 2019. Thank you for allowing me to journey alongside you on your path to wellness and abundance.

At the beginning of 2018, I invited many of you to join me on a 3-month challenge to move closer to your wellness goals. Several of you shared how your life has been changed just practicing small consistent actions. As I’ve said many times, health is not about simply removing symptoms, it’s about supporting and balancing our systems to do what God originally created them to do. Today I hope for the joy, happiness, health and abundance that awaits me. I hope for all things good. I hope to be a part of a wellness movement among that shatters the current narrative of poverty, disease and disparity for underserved, marginalized peoples.

Scripture: Job 11:18 - And you will feel secure, because there is hope, you will look around and take your rest in security

Prayer:

Dear God,

Please guide this oil through my body and energy field. Please help me to connect to You and feel Your Love surrounding me. Restore hope in my heart and illuminate my soul.

3)Motivation: (Roman Chamomile, Spruce, Ylang Ylang, Lavender)

Intention:

Today I pray for motivation to fulfill my destiny, live my passion and achieve my goals, to build my business.

Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Prayer:

Dear God,

Please guide this oil through my physical body and energy field. Help me to stay motivated. Boost my daily energy.

Affirmation (Choose 1):

4)Believe (Idaho Balsam fir, Coriander, Bergamot, Frankincense Idaho Blue Spruce, Ylang Ylang, Geranium)

Intention:

Today, please strengthen my belief in myself, my belief in others, my belief in my good health, my belief in my happiness. May my belief in these things crowd all negativity, doubt and fear, May my belief and faith conquer every barrier and obstacle.Today I choose to believe that I am a child of the most high God destined to empower others to be all God intended them to be.

Scripture:

Luke 8:50 - But Jesus on hearing this answers him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.

Prayer:

Dear God,

Please guide this oil through my body and energize my cells to believe in myself, in others, my good health, my happiness and my abundance.

Fall Diffuser Cooking and Diffuser Recipes

Hi, 

For me, this has been one of the prettiest falls and fall is not my favorite season. However, the reds, oranges and yellows coating the trees have been vibrant against the bluish/purple skies, especially as I travel across Kansas around dusk. This has been one of the busiest Octobers. It’s that time of the year when I have to be most mindful of my health or I find myself too tired, too run down, too flustered to enjoy the holidays. I’m no fun and no fun to be around. In my younger days, it was almost guaranteed that I’d be sick some time during the holidays. That is no longer my norm—I’ve learned to live above the wellness line. So I’m taking a few minutes to remind myself of the daily routine I must maintain if I’m to be my best self in the next few months. From staying hydrated to avoiding toxic chemicals,

These work great in the Dew Drop, Desert Mist, Lantern or Aria. Tip: For blends I use a lot, I multiply the recipes below and store in an empty 5 ml bottle. I can just add the total number of drops to the diffuser when needed.

Recipe of the Month

Dill Veggie Dip

(YL Culinary Cookbook)

Ingredients:

2 cups plain Greek yogurt

2 drops YL Dill Vitality EO

2 drops YL Lemon Vitality EO

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon Himalayan pink salt

Combine all ingredients in a blender, bowl, or zip top bag. Mix thoroughly and refrigerate for 3 hours. Serve with your favorite veggies (carrot sticks, bell peppers, snap peas...)

Brain Health: Dr. N's Oct. 2018 Newslett

Hi, my friend:

As the temperatures cool and the day lessens, the summer flowers whither and the leaves turn colors, I’m celebrating my health and wellness. I’m not doing as well as I would like, but I’m definitely better than I was a year ago. How are you doing? What are some successes you can celebrate. Regardless of where you are on the scale of wellness, you’re probably doing better than you realize, so let’s take a moment to celebrate and then commit to continuing our wellness journey. In this newsletter, I want to share with you highlights from my recent studies on cognitive health.  In case you wondered what to do with, Manuka and ImmuPower, I’ve got some ideas and my favorite diffuser recipe of the month. As you read, enjoy, the weather and enjoy your wellness.

As many of you know, my father died of Alzheimer’s and my mother’s congestive heart failure resulted in cognitive decline before she passed. I’m very interested in how to retain my cognitive health, despite current beliefs that mental deterioration is inevitable as we age. I’ve been studying the research of several of the best known brain specialists on the globe and I am amazed at how simple protocols for cognitive health appear to be available to all of us. I just want to share two of these protocols that have acronyms that are easy to understand and follow.

Dr. Daniel Amen, physician, author, double board certified psychiatrist, and founder of Amen Clinics and BrainMd, is best know for is work using brain imagery to determine brain health. He provides the Memory Rescue using the acronym BRIGHT MIND to identify risk factors that sabotage brain health. Below are the risks to consider:

Blood flow - Encourage good blood circulation

Retirement/Aging - Never stop learning

Inflammation - Identify sources and reduce

Genetics - Any genetic risk factors should be a wake up call, not a death sentence

Head Trauma - Put the brain in a healing environment

Toxins - Remove environmental and personal product toxins, including alcohols, mold and make up

Mental Health - Kill the ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts)

Oils of the Month

This month I have a single oil and a blend that I’m loving. First the single: Manuka. This oil heralds from a bush tree in New Zealand and Australia and is similar to tea tree, but warmer, richer and milder. I like it for its calming and immune boosting properties during the fall and winter. Its also useful for enhancing the respiratory, skin and muscles and bones systems. I rub it on my feet, or back of neck before bed or add it to my diffuser.

ImmuPower is another immune boosting favorite that I alternate with Thieves during this time of the year. I like to wear it for personal protection and diffuse it for environmental protection. It contains hyssop, mountain story, cristus,Ravintsara, frankincense, oregano, clove, cumin, and Idaho Tansy. All heavy hitter oils for our immune system. I apply it to my feet, navel, chest, temples or wrists, as well as use in my diffuser.

Diffuser recipe of the month

4 drops ImmuPower

2 drops Lemon or Lemon Vitality

2 drops clove

Place in a cold-water diffuser, such as Dew Drop, Desert Mist or Lantern. Operate according to instructions.

In Kansas Daylight Savings Time ended and we’re officially entering the season of gratefulness. I’m really feeling grateful for each of you and your courage to take charge of your health and move toward wellness. We had an amazing Wellness Workshop last month, thanks to all the team, the participants and our special guest, Karen Malone. We received education, encouragement and wisdom that was invaluable and life changing.

In this newsletter I congratulate this month’s Facebook winner; I share my favorite Dos (no don’ts) for enjoying the holidays, include the amazing November ER promos plus an added bonus, unveil a few secrets about upcoming Black Friday specials and share my favorite diffuser recipe.

Six "Dos" for the Best Holiday Season Ever

Several of you have shared that usually this time of the year means added stress and several physical issues, including allergies, colds and arthritis. However, after a year of following a personalized wellness plan that included YL essential oils, essential oil-infused supplements, NingXia Red and a few simple lifestyle changes, this year you’re feeling so much better compared to years past. You’re experiencing the results of focusing on fueling the body’s natural systems and eliminating the toxins that sabotage your wellness. I’m so grateful that God’s divine plan for health is available and simple. There are many different protocols but these plans basically agree that we need: Oxygen, sleep, movement, good nutrition and stress management.

One question I get often as we approach this season is: is it practical to maintain a healthy lifestyle during the holidays? I say, YES! And, it’s not about what you can’t have or enjoy. In fact I’ve got six "Dos" that will definitely keep you moving toward your health goals, even as you enjoy the holidays.

1) Do carry your YL oils with you at all times. Have them in every room of the house, in your car, backpack, purse, pocket and office. Use the oils for a quick breathing break to get more oxygen into the body. Diffuse the oils while your work, party and sleep. Wear your favorite essential oil (my favorite is Joy) as your holiday fragrance, avoiding any artificial and toxic fragrances when possible. If I had to select one oil for the season, it would be Thieves, the ultimate immune support containing. clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus radiata and rosemary cineol.

2) Do take your YL supplements daily. No matter what your meals look like the rest of the day, at least you’ve given the body optimal support. If you are just getting started on this wellness journey and don’t have your wellness plan, I suggest drinking at least 2 ounces of Ningxia Red—a powerhouse of antioxidants and nutrients—daily. To keep the digestive system working properly during all those holiday treats and meals, do take Life 9 (a high-potency probiotic) and your favorite enzyme. Young Living has four different enzymes. Allerzyme—a vegan option— is the strongest enzyme and attacks gas and bloating from those heavy meals. Detoxzmye is a powerhouse to clean the system. Essentialzyme is a broad spectrum enzyme that supports the hormones. Essentialzyme-4 is the broadest enzyme complex and supports proper nutrient absorption.

Finally, my all time favorite during hectic times any time of the year is Inner Defense—the immune boosting supplement with Oregano, Thyme and Lemongrass. Of course, I always have my Thieves hand sanitizer and Thieves spray to ward off germ attacks during this season.

3) Do protect your sleep. While you sleep, the body works to support healthy brain function and overall physical health. Aim for 8 hours most nights.

4) Do keep moving. Just 20 minutes of movement daily supports your gut health and suppresses inflammation. You don’t have to do a killer workout, either. Just a simple walk is enough.

5) Do manage your stress. Whether it’s the schedule, the family or the unending to-do list, keep everything in perspective. Learn to take breath breaks to reduce stress and avoid activating harmful stress hormones. A minimum of 10 deep breaths—add an essential oil—is all you need.

6) Do keep a Gratitude Journal. Yes, expressing gratitude daily has health benefits. Just write down 10 things you’re grateful for each day. It’s a simple, but powerful habit.

Oils of the Month

This month I have single and blend that I’m loving. First the single: Manuka. This oil heralds from a bush tree in New Zealand and Australia and is similar to tea tree, but warmer, richer and milder. I like it for its calming and immune boosting properties during the fall and winter. Its also useful for enhancing the respiratory, skin and muscles and bones systems. I rub it on my feet, or back of neck before bed or add it to my diffuser.

ImmuPower is another immune boosting favorite that I alternate with Thieves during this time of the year. I like to wear it for personal protection and diffuse it for environmental protection. It contains hyssop, mountain story, cristus,Ravintsara, frankincense, oregano, clove, cumin, and Idaho Tansy. All heavy hitter oils for our immune system. I apply it to my feet, navel, chest, temples or wrists, as well as use in my diffuser.

This month, I’ve got news about toxic food additives that are harming our children, my upcoming classes, fabulous freebies, ways to stay healthy on a budget and my favorite diffuser recipe of the month. I pray you have an amazing August as you refresh, recharge and recommit to the healthiest you.

As we near the end of summer, many are preparing to start school. Others are cleaning out clutter from homes, offices or yards to prepare for the changing season. This is a perfect time to clean out toxic clutter that sabotages our health. It’s also a good time to review our wellness goals and return to those lifestyle practices that may have been neglected during summer vacation.

Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics released an alarming report warning that harmful food additives pose serious threats to our children. It’s a reminder of how damaging toxic chemicals are to health and wellness. The report, based on years of research, recommend that some chemicals currently allowed should be avoided—especially by children. These chemicals are known to interfere with a child’s hormones, growth and development. Many are associated with abnormal genital development, cancer, increased body weight, as well as the immune, cardiovascular and neurological systems.

The additives of most concern are Bisphenols, Phthalates, Perfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFCs), Perchlorates, Artificial food colors and Nitrates/nitrites. Why take chances with your health and that of your family? Kick these toxins out immediately. The good news is that pure essential oils have constituents that boost the immune system and balance other systems, assisting in the proper function of the body. Removing toxic cleaners and replacing them with Thieves cleaner is a simple, safe and inexpensive first step toward reducing your toxic load.

After attending my fourth convention, I asked myself, why am I so drawn to Young Living? I was first introduced to YL essential oils over 20 years ago. Back then I didn’t consider the business opportunity. I’m a boomer and I was taught to be skeptical, to avoid pyramid schemes and voodoo. But after working through numerous health challenges myself, with my children and my parents, I found myself coming back to YL for products I could trust. I learned that the business is legal and the essential oils are from plants created by God for our health and wellness.

You see, I’m all about longevity. I like things that last, and I want to spend my money on things that will last. I remember the first knock-off purse I bought. I didn’t know it at the time. All I knew was that I could get a hundred dollar purse for 20 bucks. I bought several for gifts. But I soon learned the labels were glued cheaply and not hand-stitched. The straps were weak and other signs of poor craftsmanship. In the end I spent more than if I’d just paid the money up front for the best. That’s how it’s been for me and my health. I tried to get cheaper oils that I didn’t have to order. I tried to save money. But I can’t tell you how many products I had to throw out because either they didn’t work, or I discovered they contain toxins that there harmful. Over the years, with my journalism and researcher background, I find that the quality of the YL essential oils and oil-infused products are light years ahead of other companies. And they have lasted these 24 years. I believe I’ve saved money by investing in my wellness instead of waiting to payout huge sums because I haven’t taken care of myself. YL has stood the test of time for me.

Tips for Staying Cool

A) Use an equal amount of V-6 with Peppermint Oil and dab a drop on the back of the neck and wrist pulse points.

B) Stay hydrated. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. There’s debate over how much each person needs daily, but at least get 64 ounces. Stir in a drop of Lemon, Orange, Spearmint or Peppermint Vitality oils to increase the refreshing taste of your water.

C) Enjoy refreshing Slique Iced Tea. Steep 2 Slique tea bags in two cups boiling water. Squeeze 1/2 lemon into empty 2-quart pitcher. Add 1-2 drops Lemon Vitality and 1 drop Peppermint Vitality and mix. Pour in steeped tea, then fill pitcher with pure water. Refrigerate and serve.

DIY

Add a touch of magic to your summer nights with a DIY Citronella floral aroma bowl. Instructions: Combine 20 drops of Citronella essential oil with 1 tablespoon of witch hazel. Add to a glass bowl and fill the rest with water. Add a drop of food coloring and a plastic flower on top.

I’m so filled with gratefulness today that I praying my gratefulness is contagious. It’s hard to believe it’s June because I feel like May evaporated. However, as I look back over my calendar there were a lot of celebrations, including Mothers’s day, birthdays and graduations. I’m sure you had a few celebrations of your own. Sadly, there were tragic events and deaths that reminded me of how short life is. These were the times I was reminded that most of my daily frustrations are minor. I’d hear my mother saying, “This too shall pass.”

Roman Chamomile creates a relaxing and calming environment. It’s so soothing and gentle for the skin of children and adults. Roman Chamomile has a sweet apple scent, while German Chamomile has a grassy herbaceous scent. Roman Chamomile has a high ester content.     Recipe of the Month

    I confess. I don’t do much cooking in the summer. My husband likes to grill and I like to make smoothies and salads. I enjoy the convenience (and the health benefits) of using the YL Vitality oils during meal preparation. Here’s a few simple ways to add the Vitality oils to your meals and boost your health.

    -Add a 1-2 drops of YL Vitality oils to your water. In the heat, it’s important to stay hydrated. My favorite Vitality oils in the summer are: lemon, lime, orange, tangerine, spearmint or Citrus Fresh. I also enjoy bay laurel—my newest addition.

    -Add a drop or two of Vitality oils to your smoothie. My basic morning smoothie recipe is:

    1 cup almond milk

    2 scoops Vanilla Spice Pure Protein Complete

    1 ounce Ningxia Red

    1/4-1/2 fresh or frozen fruit

    1-2 drops lemon, lime or spearmint Vitality oils

    Depending on what I have at the time, I might add half an avocado, hand full of kale and/or few sprigs of fresh mint. This time of year i feel very creative and this smoothie keeps me alert and energetic throughout the morning.

    Hi,

    I know it’s Spring because I can kick off my shoes and walk around barefoot. That’s one of the habits I learned from my mother. Would you believe now there’s a little research around the benefits of walking barefoot—getting grounded? I’ve been thinking a lot about many of the health habits and practices I learned from my mother. So many are now being supported by Western research. “Eat your vegetables.” “Slow down and chew your food.” “Keep both ends open.” She taught me natural ways to support my health and avoid pharmaceuticals long before we knew how damaging these drugs could be to our bodies. One of my long-term projects is to share how my mother’s wisdom predates much of today’s modern research. For example, she had us taking fish oil (a.k.a. Cod liver oil) every year during the school year. Even though she’s with the Lord, celebrate her legacy as we celebrate Mother’s Day this month. May you celebrate all the women in your life who’ve contributed to who you’ve become today.

    Recipes for the Month
    Lymphatic Support Deodorant
    3 drops of Cypress
    2 drops Grapefruit
    1 drop Orange
    Place oils in a clean 5 ml bottle, top with carrier oil. I used sweet almond oil. Place a YL roller ball filament on top and use as a roll-on deodorant. These oils support the lymphatic system to boost your immune function.
    Balancing Massage Oil
    5 drops each:
    Jasmine
    Basil,
    Orange
    Joy or Rose
    Patchouli
    Place in 2 ounce spray glass bottle and top with carrier oil. I used sesame see oil. Spray on body and rub in after shower in morning or before bed.

    2 drops Jasmine
    2 drops Geranium

    Dr. N's April Newsletter (2018)

    Hi,

    I realized this month that Spring Cleaning is more than just cleaning my house. For as long as I can remember, every spring I felt like having a nervous breakdown because of everything I needed to do. This year I recognized that its not just my home, but also my calendar, mind and body that are cluttered. For some reason, all the things I committed to in January are impossible to fulfill by April. I feel guilty, ashamed and inadequate. Can you relate? If so, I’ll share a couple of ways I’m breaking this pattern and restoring peace and freedom in my life.

    1. I am choosing to remove limiting thoughts, beliefs, attitudes and actions that are no longer serving me. There are things I’ve been doing out of duty, rather than desire. I’m giving myself permission to reevaluate life and realign what I'm doing with my divine purpose and calling.
    2. I am choosing to make my physical, mental and spiritual health top priority. Placing others' needs before my own is a belief I was taught that ultimately damages myself and others. If I’m not healthy, I have little to offer to others.

    So, far, I'm encouraged with the progress I see in my health and my work. It's a journey, not a sprint. I’ll share more detail about what I’m learning and doing in later newsletters and calls.

    In February as most people celebrate Valentine’s Day, I also honor my African American/Black ancestors who paved the way through blood and tears so I could enjoy health and wellness today. I especially give tribute to my mother Geneva Aaron Stephens Bailey who taught me to never give up looking for the Divine keys to wellness. She started me on this wellness journey and I’m forever grateful. I’m happy to say that I’m still taking my fish oil, only now it’s easier with OmegaGize.

    It’s hard not to walk around with fear and anxiety when we hear the reports about the horrible sickness plaguing the country this winter. I find myself getting worried as my husband forgets to wash his hands after coughing or a co-worker leaves the copy machine after blowing her nose several times. However, recently I was reminded that my greatest enemy isn’t the germ-filled environment. My greatest enemy is often me. I believe my body was designed to maintain a state of balance and wellness. My immune system is amazing and unfortunately, horribly neglected. I’ve decided that rather than wallow in fear, I will apply a little self love and be more intentional about keeping my immune system strong and healthy. The more I’m tempted to be fearful, the more I’m determined to nourish myself. This is self-love and it includes caring about the quality of my food, my movement, my thoughts, my rest and my emotions. I choose to love myself rather than fear others.     February Essential Rewards Promos

    Oils of the Month

    Spearmint, a member of the Labiatae (mint) family is distilled from the leaves. Harvested in the USA, spearmint supports the respiratory and digestive systems. It’s also known to lift one’s spirits causing one to feel more energetic and positive. According to the FDA, it is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for consumption. It’s refreshing in a glass of water, hot or cold. Or, dilute one drop on a teaspoon of honey or in 4 ounce of rice/nut milk. It’s less intense than Peppermint. I enjoy it in my morning Ningxia cocktail: 1 Tablespoon Mindwise, 2 ounces Ningxia, 3 droppers of Mineral Essence and 1-2 drops of Spearmint.

    Blue Tansy, a member of the Compositae (daisy) family is steamed distilled from the leaves and flowers. This exotic and luxurious plant is a native Morocco, often used in expensive skin care products. It’s powerful affect on the immune, nervous and musculoskeletal systems outweighs its price, in my opinion. It only takes a drop or two to reap its benefits. Any stubborn joints are an afterthought once I apply my rollerball recipe or lotion. Give it a try and let me know your experience.

    Happy New Year!

    It’s exciting to wake up to a new year—2018. I started out by thanking God for all the events and people that were part of my life last year. As you review all the wonderful things that you’re grateful for in 2017, join me and congratulate yourself for your wellness successes, big and small. Be encouraged because moving toward a healthful life style is a journey. In this newsletter, I want to share a 90-day challenge that will keep you moving forward toward a more healthful you. I’ve also got the latest news on the Slique in 60 Challenge, January promos, our upcoming Live your Passion DIY workshop and my next Hour of Empowerment. This year, I’m more committed to helping you reach your wellness goals and enjoy the best quality of life. Please let me know how you are doing and how I can support you more.

    Take the 90- day Wellness Challenge

    As a wellness professional, I found the political and legal climate at the end of 2017 to be disheartening. I'm more convinced than ever that we all need to be more proactive and preventive about our health. There is no better time than the start of the new year to begin or renew your wellness journey. You'll make progress in just 90 days with a plan that's personalized and simple to follow. I’ll talk about how to create your plan on my next Hour of Empowerment, Jan. 20. However, here’s a summary of the plan with the workshop if you want to get started now.

    Before you start the challenge, take time to do a personal assessment. Ask yourself the following questions. Write your answers in a journal, share with a friend or send me a note. You increase your success rate just by telling another person.

    Introduction: Personal Assessment Quiz

    How do I rate my health today on a 1-10scale?

    1. How do I feel physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually? (In the morning, afternoon, and evening)

    2. What am I eating? Do a 24-hour food recall and write down everything you ate. Start with last meal or snack and go back 24 hours,

    3. What am I taking? Pharmaceuticals, prescriptions, over the counter drugs, supplements? What am I taking these for?

    What would I like my health to be like in 2018?

    Visualize a healthy you.

    Now you’re ready to start the 90-day Challenge. This is a doable challenge because you’re only committing to 90 days, 30 days at a time.

    It's a challenge I’ve been doing from Dr. Amanda Luke's book: Rediscovering Nature's Essentials: A Simplified Essential Oil Desk Reference. You can purchase it at http://amzn.to/2C52swQ

    Here's a summary of the wellness challenge:

    Day 1-30

    1. Get a partner, face-to-face or virtual.

    2. Choose a system you want to support:

    Musculoskeletal, Cardiovascular, Digestive, Respiratory, Integumentary, Endocrine, Reproductive, Excretory, and Nervous System & Emotions.

    3. Pick 3 YL Essential Oils that support that system.

    4.Pick 3 YL Oil-infused nutritional supplements that system.

    5. Pick 3 lifestyle choices that support that system.

    6. Write 3 action steps. Say them out loud daily.

    7. Place a copy of your plan on the fridge or wherever you will see it every day often. Set out oils and supplements so they are easy to use every day.

    Day 31-60

    1. A couple weeks before the end of first 30 days, review your plan and reorder any needed oils or supplements

    2. Assess how you are feeling? While it is still early to see much change, note the smallest positive result. Do you want to add any oil or supplement, tweak any action step?

    3. Review your lifestyle choices? How are you doing? Celebrate each success. Will you continue working on these or add other choices?

    4. Update you actions steps. Be specific and set dates.

    5. Continue nourishing your body with essential oils and oil-infused supplements.

    Days 61-90

    1. Assess your nutritional and essential oils. What do you need to reorder?

    2. Review what you’ve been doing daily. Make any adjustments.

    3. Celebrate the lifestyle choices that are now habits.

    4. Evaluate your progress with your action steps. Remember to say your goals out loud daily.

    5. Review how you are feeling? Physically, emotionally and spiritually?

    Stay encouraged. You’re making progress, especially when you think about how many years it took to get where you where when you started.

    If you have accomplished your goals, select any system to support for the next 90 days.

It's purifying, cleansing and less intense than its cousin, Eucalyptus globules. Place it in your diffuser or make a DIY room spritzer to eliminate stale orders.     Happy Holidays!

    I’m diffusing the “Christmas Spirit” blend—the one I got free last month—as the temperatures drop and snow is predicted. I’ve got a little time to think about what I want to do for gifts, meals and all that fun stuff. Honestly, I’m already starting to feel a little stressed.

    Usually around this time of year, people expect me to scold them about overindulging, or nag them to substitute “healthier” options for their grandma’s favorite dessert. I’ll admit that in my profession as a nutrition educator, I’ve believed for years that I was the “food” police. But over the last few years I’m less concerned about all the foods to avoid and more concerned about overall wellness during this season.

    More and more research points to optimal health being about the total person: mind, body and spirit. It’s not only about good nutrition and physical activity, but also positive attitudes and social relationships. This time of year is when we traditionally set aside more time for family, friends and partying. So, can we enjoy all the activities and the people we love without compromising our health? And what about those of us struggling with depression and sadness during this season? I believe there are a few simple things we can do daily to keep our immune system working in tip top shape so we can fully enjoy this season. I’ll talk more about this on my December Hour of Empowerment, but here’s a few suggestions to get you started.

    1) Be grateful. Find at least 10 things you are thankful for each day. Be specific and remind yourself of these things when you start moving toward the negative attitude spectrum. My father always reminded us that there is always someone worse off than us.

    2) Boost your immune system. Maintain a daily routine—ideally morning—that includes whole-food supplementation. I make sure I get my Ningxia Red, Master Formula, Mineral Essence, Super B, Super C and Calcium Plus daily. These are not substitutes for whole, nutrient dense foods, but they help because during this season, I tend to relax my health routines—eating and exercise. And when I’m tired, I’m more emotional, irritable and anxious. Supplements, as they imply, may provide an extra boost for the immune system. What we like more about this time of year often results in poor nutrition, lack of sleep, anxiety and immobility— all of which weaken your immune response.

    3) Boost your digestive system. When you’re enjoying all those favorite holiday meals and treats, be sure to take probiotics and enzymes daily. Just taking Life 9 before bed will nourish your gut. Taking enzymes before or with meals will help those foods to digest more easily.

    4) Eat defensively. Couple fresh fruit and vegetables with less nutritious, but delicious foods. For example, eat coleslaw with your barbecue.

    5) Detox daily. Most people think of detoxing as a major event they should do at least once a year. However, the body was designed to detox on a regular basis. The skin, the kidneys, colon and liver all work 24/7 to remove undesirables from our bodies. Unfortunately, the toxins entering the average person these days often overload the body’s natural defense. Simply doing a few things regularly can ease this burden. I’ll talk more about this on our call December 16. However, just drinking warm water with lemon each morning is a big step toward strengthening the detox machine. Or, try my Wake Up Tea below.

    November 2017 Newsletter

    As I write this, it is the first day of daylight savings time where I live—Fall back. To be honest, I’m not feeling 100% and decided to stay in and do a little self care. As we enter the holiday season, it’s good to remind ourselves to take time for ourselves. In this newsletter I’ll share a free resource on self-care, my four tips for looking and feeling great this season, along with information on the November promos, classes, conference call and recipes.

    Tips for Seasonal Self-Care

    Already, I’m feeling the pressures of the season, juggling work, family and community.Here’s a few things I’m doing to simplify my life and savor the moments.

    1. As I’ve been recently promoted to a new position, I’m discovering new stressors. This quick mindfulness, breathing exercise restores my calmness and keeps me centered. I take a favorite oil, usually Valor for courage and confidence. I place 1-2 drops in one palm and rub my palms together. I cup my hands together over my nose, making a scent tent and practice this breathing pattern: breathe in to the count of 4, hold to the count of 2, breathe out to the count of 6. I continue this breathing cycle for 3 minutes. It’s amazing to me how those three minutes are all I need to relax, refocus and restore myself.

    2. I start and end my day with gratitude. This is not a quick, “Thank, God! sigh when I get up or go to bed. I consciously, say thanks for the specific things I expect to enjoy before the day starts and the specific things I enjoyed at the end of that day. This keeps me focused on the positives in a world where the negatives threaten my joy constantly.

    3. I’ve discovered that the Savvy Minerals make-up not only nourishes my skin it looks great with very little effort. On my most hurried days I can quickly brush my foundation all over my face, use the Multi-Tasker on my eyebrows, apply the mascara and moisten my lips with the gloss. I’m amazed at how many people comment that I look great. For those special times, I enjoy adding eyeshadow, blush, eyeliner and bronzer, but I don’t feel guilty when I just apply my basic four. It’s the natural look I enjoy the most.

    4. As the days are shorter, I already notice that my skin is a little drier so I really appreciate that my diffusers are also humidifiers. The Desert Mist is becoming my favorite because it’s durable, simple to use and runs for at least 8 hours. Around this time of year Thieves is my favorite go-to blend for diffusing. I bet you can guess why.

    Simplest Hot Spice Tea

    I used my free Cinnamon Bark from my October Essential Rewards order to make this tea. I enjoy several cups a day. It’s so simple it takes longer to write directions than to make it. Cinnamon is helpful for balancing blood sugar, increasing circulation and boosting the immune system. It’s an ancient spice with a delicious aroma and taste, used internally and aromatically. It’s potent, so a little goes a long way. I place 1 tiny crystal nugget of Himalayan salt in the bottom of my 8-10 ounce tea cup. I drop 1-2 drops of Cinnamon Bark Essential oil on top of the salt. Pour in hot water at 180-190 degrees Fahrenheit. Stir to disperse the Cinnamon. Drink and enjoy.

    A Fishy Labor Day Memory

    Did your mother make you take cod liver oil from Labor Day until Easter? I remember the first time my mother introduced this yearly ritual to me. She offered me a glass of store-bought orange juice--a real treat because she rarely bought juice. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a basic scientific fact: oil and water out mix. After that experience, I begged Mama to allow me to take my daily cod liver oil on a spoon and chase it with the orange juice. She consented. Turns out, though Mama knew best.

    Research now shows that cod liver oil contains balanced levels of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D and vitamin A, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docashexaenoic acid (DHA). These are vital for human metabolism, support healthy transport of cholesterol and have an anti-inflammatory effect. Of course today we have to worry about whether the cod liver oil is coming from a lean source, preferably Alaskan waters in the Pacific Ocean.

    While I appreciate my mother's wisdom, I confess, today I'd take a good supplement. Cod liver oil can be found in gel capsules that are much easier to swallow. I prefer YL's OmegaGize because it combines fish oil, vitamin D and CoQ10. The omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, promote healthy brain, nervous system, heart health and immune system.     Five Ways I Boost My Immune System

    I believe the body was designed to heal itself. When I "feel something coming on"-- loss of energy, a scratchy throat, achy joints, queasy stomach--I don't reach for a drug to relieve symptoms. I launch into my trusty immune-boosting routine. For me, it's not about isolated symptoms, it's about my whole body's system. Interested in what I do?

    1. First I check my stress level: Mental, physical or emotional stress will weaken my immune system. Do I need to adjust my schedule, attitude or work? I've found if I don't start here, I'm sabotaging my health.

    2. Next, I check my diet. I learned many years ago too much starchy sugary foods weaken my immune system and deplete my immune-boasting nutrients. I also increase those foods with antioxidants that fight those free radicals that weaken my body. Practically speaking for me that means, limiting high calorie, low nutrient foods--processed foods and desserts--and increasing high-nutrient foods--fresh produce, nuts, seeds and fish. I also add immune boosting supplements to my diet. Depending on how I feel, I may choose Young Living's Vitamin C, Longevity or Inner Defense.

    3. Next, I check my environment. Have I been working in high dust, pollen or mold areas? Have I been exposed to people fighting bacterial or viral infections? If so, I immediately begin diffusing pure, air cleansing, therapeutic-grade essential oils. I keep a diffuser running on my office and several rooms of my house. My favorite single oils are citronella, lemon or peppermint. My favorite blends are Thieves and Purification by Young Living.

    4. Next, I make sure I'm drinking plenty of pure water during the day. I like to add a drop or two of lemon or peppermint, but I avoid any kind of sweetener.

    5. Finally, I make sure I'm getting enough sleep at night. To enhance my sleep I use 3-4 drops of one or more essential oils and rub on the bottom of my feet. This relaxes me and allows me to enjoy the immune-boosting properties of pure essential oils while I sleep. My choice of oils varies, but lately I've enjoyed Cedarwood, Lemon Myrtle and Frankincense.

    Tummy Comfort Tips

    If tummy discomfort threatens to spoil your holiday meals, attack the problem, not the symptoms. Dr. Bland, author of "Disease Delusion" suggests digestive issues are related to gastrointestinal imbalances. He, along with numerous medical practitioners of functional medicine, offer the Four Rs for relief and restoration. It's simple and easy to remember.

    1) Remove: Avoid foods that cause you problems. Common culprits include: gluten, casein, soy, peanuts, eggs and shellfish. I'm not suggesting you never eat the foods you like, only be strategic and aware. Several years ago, I was eating all the time, gaining weight, but always feeling groggy and tired. After several tests, the doctor discovered I was not getting any nutrients from the foods I was eating. And, I was sensitive to a slew of foods. Over time by following the 4Rs below, I've got more energy and vitality than I had before.

    2) Replace: If you're noticing undigested food in your poop, that's a sign that your body lacks the enzymes needed to properly digest your food. Simply taking a digestive enzyme supplement before meals can improve digestion. Be sure to use a supplement that includes the different enzymes are needed to digest fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

    3) Reinoculate: Take a good prebiotic and probiotic. Probiotics contain the good bacteria you want in your gut to support digestion and immune function. Numerous research studies show live probiotic organisms such as Bifidobacterium Bifidum and Lactobacillus Acidophilus are safe and effective. Because you need a dose that contains a 2 billion count, a serving of yogurt won't help much.

    4) Repair: Take supplements to support the digestive system. Dr. Bland suggests zinc, pantothenic acid, omega-3 fish oils, L-glutamine, magnesium and B-Complex supplements.

    (I use Master Formula, Ningxia Red juice, Life 5, OmegaGize, Super B and Super Cal from Young Living.)

    Just a couple other tips: Drink plenty of water throughout the day and eat smaller portions--your stomach is only the size of your fist. I also find Peppermint, Ginger, DiGize and Lemon pure essential oils to be supportive to my digestive system.

    Skin Soother Salve

    While the winter months usher in holiday festivities, the harsh cold weather can be brutal to the skin, Here's a favorite recipe I quickly mix to keep my skin soft and protected against chapping and ashiness. Lavender is touted for its many benefits for skin health. Melrose contains melaleuca, rosemary and clove, an oil blend I turn to for all my skin challenges.

    Skin Soother Salve

    Melt 1/4 cup of organic coconut oil. (I use a candle warmer.) Mix in 12 drops of Lavender and 12 drops of Melrose. Whisk or blend and pour into a 2 ounce jar. Cool and the mixture will solidify. Apply as needed. Note: body heat melts coconut oil quickly.

    Calm During the Storm

     I can't believe I slept through that last storm. When I drove to work, there were trees down and limbs all over the place and I didn't lose any sleep. It used to be that before a storm I knew the rain was coming by my cough, or should I say my chronic coughing spells. But not this time. I have been using my essential oils more consciously to support my overall healthy, especially my respiratory system. Recently I've been enjoying the woodsy, earthy fragrance of cedarwood. Native American tradition says that it enhances spiritual communication, symbolically representing a protective umbrella over the earth. For me, it's a reminder of God's protection of me. I just learned that cedarwood has sedative and calming properties, maybe even increases melatonin. I found this interesting because several months ago I added cedarwood to my nightly food massage regime, along with Bergamont, Frankinscense and Lemon Myrtle. I feel relaxed when I go to bed and energized when I wake up. How are you enjoying your essential oils? I'd love to hear your stories.

    Looking for non-toxic safe skincare products that work?

     

    Hi,
    Two years ago, when I woke up from my surgery, a young nursing student was staring at me with a puzzled look."What's wrong?" I asked. "You don't look that old," she answered looking between me and my chart. I felt relieved. Here I was feeling unkempt and drowsy hoping no one would see my morning face and she thought I looked young. I've been working for some time to minimize these culprits, but finding non-toxic, environmentally safe cosmetics and skin care products has been more difficult for me.  I do have a favorite toner and moisturizer I've been making since 1997. At first I tried these to save money. They worked so well, I've continued to make and use them. I've included my recipies below. Give them a try and tell me how you like them. 
     
    Basic Cleansing/Moisturizing Cream
    Some may want to use this as a cleanser and a moisturizer. My skin has changed from oily to normal so I have only used it as a moisturizer. I also use a very little that I smooth over my face and neck after using my toner. 
    Ingredients:
    4 Tablespoons sweet almond oil
    1 Tablespoon beeswax
    1 Tablespoon of warm water or strong herbal tea
    2 Tablespoons Aloe Vera Gel
    1/4 Teaspoon borax
    1/8 Teaspoon Vitamin E
    5 drops of Geranium or Lavender essential oil
     
    Supplies: 2 small stainless or heat-resistant glass bowls. Measuring cups and spoons, small whisk. I use candle warmers. However, you can use a double boiler or small pan.
     
    Instructions:
    Put the sweet almond oil and beeswax in one of the bowls and sit on the candle warmer to melt. In the other bowl, heat the water (tea), aloe vera and borax until dissolved. Remove both bowls from the heat. Slowly pour the borax mixture into the oil mixture and beat constantly with a whisk until cool, thick and creamy. Add the vitamin E and essential oil. Mix well and store in to wide mouth container. This makes about 4 ounces and keeps unrefrigerated for at least 30 days.            
     
    Herbal Toner
    Ingredients:
    1 Tablespoon dried lavender flowers
    1 Cup witch hazel
    6 drops of essential oil, your favorite combination or single, such as ylang, ylang, lavender, geranium, jasmine
     
    Supplies: Measuring cups and  spoons, pint jar with tight-fitting lid.
     
    Instructions: 
    Combine all ingredients in the jar and set in a dark cool place for 2 weeks. Shake jar every few days. Strain and pour into 2-4 ounce spray bottles. Spray on a cotton ball to use after cleansing your face but before applying moisturizer. No refrigeration needed.
